They came out of the trees slowly, hesitantly, drawn by the fading lantern light. There were three that I could see, but I sensed there were more in the bushes, watching in silence. My heart stilled as they curved around me in a circle, their heads lowered, tasting the air with short snuffing noises. Branches cracked and creaked in their pale glow. Light seeped from their eyes, their strange bodies, creating fuzzy nimbuses around them. I didn’t know what to do, or even think. I just sat stock still in my little circle of candlelight and watched them warily. Then she stepped out of the forest.
